Ise Shrine

Ise Shrine

Ise shrine is made up of the Naiku, officially known as Kotai shrine, dedicated to the worship of Amaterasu Omikami, goddess of the sun, and the Geku, or Toyouke Omikami, the deity of agriculture, bestowing rice, food, clothing and shelter. Including the subsidiary Shinto shrines and sanctuaries that belong to the Naiku and Geku, there are a total of 125 shrines making Ise shrine the largest shrine in Japan. Making the pilgrimage to Ise shrine has been popular for many years. Long ago this was reserved for the noble classes of the Heian period however gradually spread to include the general public. In the Edo period making the pilgrimage to Ise shrine became a major attraction. The shrine is said to receive more than 3 million visitors each year.

In 1893 Mikimoto Pearl Island became the first place in the world to successfully cultivate pearls. Today, you can visit the island where it all began. Set in the crystal blue waters of Toba Bay, the beauty of the surrounding ocean will have you spellbound. (Pearls can also be purchased on the island.)

The Toba Aquarium is largest in the world with walkways totaling a distance of 1.5km. The aquarium boasts 12 different zones that reproduce the natural habitats of approximately 1,000 species and approximately 20,000 ocean and river creatures.

Enjoy the saw-toothed coastline as well as the Ise Bay on the 16.3 km drive connecting the Ise Shrine and Toba. At the top of the mountain lies the Kongo-Shoji Temple, which legend says protects the demon gate of the Ise Shrine.

This pair of rocks is situated in the sea off Tachiishizaki in the precincts of Futami-Okitama Shrine. The sacred rocks are linked by five huge straw ropes which are replaced in May, September and December every year.

Okage Yokocho is a popular sightseeing destination that is always bustling with tourists. Visitors can take in traditional architecture, representative of the Edo and Meiji periods that existed along the Iseji route, which have been relocated or reproduced along the main street, boasting a wide range of shops and restaurants that takes visitors on an enjoyable journey into the history and culture of Ise. Visitors can also purchase some of the local specialties of the Mie area, including Akafuku mochi, Ise Udon, locally brewed sake and Matsuzaka cotton products etc.
